Methodology

How the numbers are computed

Every page on this site is a deterministic projection of a dataset crawled from the public Shopify App Store. The dataset currently holds 1,812 live listings, 90,731 counted reviews and 1,386 developers, and it grows while the crawl runs. Nothing is hand picked, scored by an editor, or paid for.

The ranking formula

Within a category, apps are ordered by a single score:

bayes  = (50 * leafMean + rating * count) / (50 + count)
score  = bayes * ln(1 + count) * (1 + 0.1 * ln(1 + reviewsLast180Days))
  • rating and count are the values Shopify displayed on the listing at crawl time. An app with no ratings scores 0 and sorts to the bottom.
  • leafMean is the plain mean rating of the rated apps in the same leaf category. It is the prior, with weight m = 50, so an app with 10 five-star reviews cannot outrank one with 1,000 reviews at 4.8. An app in several categories uses the mean of its category priors.
  • reviewsLast180Days counts dated reviews in the last 180 days from the collected review set when one exists, otherwise from the reviews shown on the listing page itself. When no dated reviews were collected the term is 1.
  • Ties break on Built for Shopify, then review count, then name.

No other signal enters the score: not price, not badges beyond the tie-break, not any review-derived fact, and not the operator's commercial interest.

Trust tier

A count-based label with no judgment attached: New (fewer than 5 reviews or launched less than 6 months ago), Emerging (5 to 49), Established (50 to 499), Leader (500 or more, or the top 5% of a category by review count with a Bayesian rating at or above the category median and at least 50 reviews). Negative signals are shown only as numbers, never as a warning label.

Which pages are indexable

  • Category hubs are indexable when the category has at least 5 apps with 5 or more reviews. Below that the page exists but carries noindex.
  • App pages are indexable at tier A: 20 or more reviews, or 5 or more reviews with Built for Shopify or a Build Award. Tier B (5 to 19 reviews, or 1 or more reviews with 6 or more feature handles, 2 or more third-party integrations and a listing text of 400 or more characters) and tier C (everything else) are noindex,follow and promoted automatically when a threshold is crossed. A badge alone never indexes a zero-review app.
  • Integration hubs need 5 or more apps whose works-with field resolves to them. Shopify's own surfaces (Checkout, POS, Flow, Customer accounts and anything under apps.shopify.com/extensions) are never counted as integrations.
  • Developer pages need 2 or more live apps or 20 or more reviews in total.
  • The sitemap lists indexable pages only.

Pricing fields

Starting price is Shopify's from-price when the listing shows one, else the cheapest paid plan, else $0 when the listing marks a free plan or free install. Free plan means the listing says free, free plan available, or has a $0 plan that is not usage based. Trial days come from the listing summary, else the longest plan trial. Usage fees are shown verbatim from the plan card and never turned into a computed cost until the parse is validated. Plans billed outside Shopify are labelled as such and the developer's own pricing is never guessed.

Reviews and quoting

  • Rating and review count in the structured data are always the values Shopify displayed. No rating is ever computed into the schema.
  • Excerpts are at most 25 words of one review, shown with the star rating, store name as displayed on Shopify, country, stated tenure and date, and linked to the source review on apps.shopify.com with rel="nofollow ugc". Full review bodies are never republished.
  • Shopify's own AI review summary is never republished.
  • Developer email addresses are reduced to their domain. Personal data beyond the public store name and country is not stored.
  • A developer or merchant can ask for an excerpt to be suppressed; counts stay, the quote goes. Write to the address on the About page.

Ownership disclosure

This site is operated by Reaktion ApS, which also publishes a Shopify app in the analytics category (handle reaktion-1). It is in the dataset and ranked by the formula above like every other app (#5 of 40 in Ads), (#1 of 6 in Advertising - Other). There are no sitewide links to the operator, no call-to-action blocks and no curated modules anywhere on the site. The rendered rank is diffed against the formula rank at build time.

Data freshness

Each page shows a data-as-of stamp from its listing's crawl time. Pages are regenerated at most hourly. Apps removed from the App Store drop out of hub tables on the next build. Last category crawl: 2026-10-14.
